Journal 9:
1. what were the consequences to the church, and village, when they decided to give the missionaries land in the evil forest?
2. what are the cultural gains and losses to both the Ibo, and the colonial powers because of the decision to locate the church in the forest?
Answer:
1. The consequences towards the church was that it was placed in the evil forest. The villagers hate and do not want to be in the evil forest,so that will make less people come to the church to become Christians. The losses that the village has is that they let the missionaries build a church in their village. This will make it easier for brave villagers to covert, and worship "the real god".
2. The cultural gains and losses for the Ibo culture is that villagers may convert to Christianity and give the missionaries more power in the village. The gains of putting the church in the forest is complicated. The elders thought it would be a good idea to put it in the evil forest because it will kill the white men. But it didn't so they have a church now. The colonial powers gained a church which make their plan to convert Africans to Christianity easier. The losses of having a church in the evil forest is that it is "evil" and bad, but it does not harm them but the villagers think it will harm them. So they might be reluctant to go to a church in a evil place.
